Relax. AI is not deleting your dev job.
If you're already inside the market, the panic being sold to you on LinkedIn is not describing your situation. Somebody has to run all of this infrastructure, and that somebody is a developer.
There's an industry now whose entire product is your anxiety.
You know the posts. "Developers are cooked." "I built a full SaaS in 40 minutes with three prompts." "If you're still writing code by hand in 2026 you're already unemployable." Screenshot of a terminal, a chart with no axis labels, a call to action to buy the course. It works because fear is the cheapest engagement there is — nobody scrolls past a post that says their livelihood is ending.
I want to say the boring thing instead, because the boring thing is closer to true: if you are already in this market with real experience, you are probably fine. Not guaranteed, not entitled to anything, but fine. And the anxiety you're carrying is doing nothing for you except making you worse at your job.
The part I'm not going to sugarcoat
Junior entry is getting harder. I don't think there's an honest way around that.
The tasks that used to be a junior's first year — the small CRUD screen, the test suite nobody wanted to write, the form validation, the migration script — are exactly the tasks a model does well now. That was the ladder. A chunk of the lowest rungs got sawed off, and the industry hasn't yet built the replacement.
That's real and it deserves a real conversation, not a "just build in public" platitude. But notice what it isn't: it isn't "developers are being replaced." It's the entry ramp narrowing while the road stays open. Those are very different claims, and the click farmers deliberately blur them, because "hiring is harder if you have zero experience" doesn't go viral.
For everyone else, look at what's actually being built
Step away from the timeline and look at the capital.
Countries are pouring money into AI as a sovereignty problem, not a product problem. Brazil is funding national supercomputing capacity. Southeast Asia — the Philippines especially — is turning into a datacenter build-out zone. The Gulf states are putting sovereign wealth into compute. The US, the EU, China, India: every one of them has decided that not owning this infrastructure is a strategic liability.
None of that is a chatbot. That's power contracts, cooling, networking, orchestration, storage, observability, identity, billing, compliance, and about forty layers of software that has to exist between a rack in a warehouse and something a person can use.
Every past build-out went this way. Electrification didn't reduce demand for electricians. The web didn't reduce demand for people who understand networks. Cloud was supposed to delete sysadmins and instead created an entire discipline that pays more than the thing it replaced. Making a capability cheaper and more available has historically meant more of it gets built, and more of it built means more people needed to keep it standing.
I'd go further: I think it's nearly impossible for this level of infrastructure investment to happen without producing developer roles. The money is already committed. The concrete is already being poured. That work doesn't get done by the model that runs inside it.
What actually changes for mid-level and above
Not the existence of the job. The shape of it.
Less time producing syntax. More time deciding what should exist, checking what came back, and being accountable for a system you can explain to people who don't read code. I wrote about that shift in Getting better at the job the model left you — the short version is that it's a harder job, not a smaller one.
If your value was "I type Java fast," yes, that specific value is compressing. If your value is "I know why this system breaks under load, I know which trade-off the business can survive, and I can tell when the generated code is quietly wrong" — that got more valuable, because now there's ten times more code arriving that nobody has verified.
The cost of the panic itself
Here's what the doom content actually does to people.
It makes them freeze. They don't start the project because "what's the point, AI will do it anyway." They don't apply because "they probably want an AI engineer now." They study nothing because everything feels obsolete before they finish the tutorial. They spend two hours a night reading threads about the end of the profession and zero hours building anything.
Anxiety feels like preparation. It isn't. It's the exact opposite — it's the thing that stops you from preparing, while giving you the sensation that you're taking the problem seriously.
And it costs you more than career momentum. Sleep, focus, the ability to enjoy work you used to like. I've watched competent engineers talk themselves into a depressive spiral over a prediction made by someone whose actual revenue comes from a $97 course.
So: relax, and keep studying
Those two go together. "Relax" is not "do nothing."
Keep shipping. Keep learning how this stuff actually works in production rather than in demos — the costs, the failure modes, the evals, the integration patterns. I made the case for that in The AI boom is coming, and I still believe the positioning window is open.
But do it from a calm place. Curiosity compounds. Panic doesn't. The developer who spends the next year quietly building things and understanding the infrastructure everyone is racing to construct will be in a very good position — and will have had a much better year than the one who spent it refreshing a feed engineered to keep them scared.
The vacancies aren't going anywhere. Someone has to take care of all of this.
